DTV Leads 2008 Market in China

AVS based IPTV Sees Market Turn
Advanced Video System (AVS) is a China homegrown encoding and decoding technical standard for video transmission and receiving, endorsed by the Chinese government. However, it did not have wide application until the recently announced AVS-based IPTV networking project completion by China Netcom in Dalian city, Liaoning province. AVS becomes competing technology with MPEG4 and H.264 in China. AVS provides a much reduced royalty fee to patent holders, but is facing the challenge of insufficient semiconductor supply .(more...)
FTTX Gains Market in China
China has the largest number of broadband subscribers in the world, but very limited FTTH (Fiber To The Home) subscribers. For example, Wuhan (8 million residents) is a major city with FTTH installation in China but it has only 30K FTTH subscribers. Success of xDSL deployment is one reason for the slow FTTH development. Meanwhile, the high cost of FTTH is another reason.
