China’s IC design houses: product trends and profiles
Most products developed by China’s IC design houses are low to mid-end products due to the limited technological development that has gone into them. In the May issue of China e-Outlook, we looked at CPU/MCU/DSP products, as part one of our IC Design House report. Part two of our report will take an in-depth look at Smart card chips and consumer ICs. The Smart card chip market has huge growth potential due to China’s large population and growing economy. Local design houses are active players in this government regulated business. (more...)

Track design wins while outsourcing to China
At the May EDS conference, tracking design wins was the hottest topic discussed from Avnet and Arrow to smaller distributors as well as field sales representatives. With the continuous outsourcing to China, ODM/EMS providers prefer local sourcing to reduce costs and improve the visibility of the supply chain. With design activity shifting to China, local supply is becoming ever important. Mid-tier companies are being forced to prepare new strategies to compete in the global markets. (more...)

Shinco Electronics: a case study in local sourcing and design

Consolidation underway in China’s handset market
China’s handset makers are facing two big challenges today: a slowing increase in demand and a shortage of key components. However, the three biggest players, which have claimed 36% of the domestic market share (Bird, Huizhou based TCL and Shenzhen-based Konka), aim to double their shipments in 2004. Some of the second tier Chinese handset makers such as Naijing based Panda Communications and Dalian-based Daxian, expect to do the same. Faced with such challenges, one has to wonder where and how they will sell their products. The strategy that these Chinese companies have taken is to actively seek international partnerships to increase exports and improve their supply chain. (more...)

China makes strides on IP protection
China has been getting an awful lot of press these days about its level of commitment to protecting IPR and its ability to keep counterfeit components out of the supply chain as it further integrates into the global electronics community. The following report looks at where China now stands in its ability to protect IP in the supply chain and what avenues are available to you to register IP and protect against counterfeits. (more...)
