A-GPS Sees Opportunities
Due to the restructuring of major China telecom operators, China will not issue 3G licenses in 2008. Telecom equipment manufacturers will have to seek business opportunities among 2G products. GPS is one driving factor, but will not be deployed rapidly because of limited chip supply, high costs, and high signal sensitivity challenges. However, China Outlook Analysts note that China Unicom launched A-GPS based positioning and navigation services for CDMA subscribers. A-GPS uses basestations as position reference. Since the GPS service is bundled with Internet and email, subscribers are accepting the increased monthly fee package. Digital TV Sees Market Opportunities
The recently released DTV related government policies are positive for market development over the next 3 years. The importance is that the policy is developed and released by the State Administration Committee which is head of the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) and the State Administration of Radio and Television (SARFT). Due to market interest conflicts between MII and SARFT, the two government bodies could never sit around the same table, resulting in the delayed DTV standard and delayed IPTV and handset TV development in China.
