HDTV Drives EPON and GPON Demand
Digital TV is the bread and butter business today for cable operators in China, but two-way interactive HDTV is the future lifeblood to improve ARPU. To meet HDTV bandwidth demand, cable networks have to build for FTTB + networks. In China today, one optical node covers a certain number of subscribers. Cable operators want to improve to one node covering more subscribers in 2 years. FTTNode is the EPON standard in China. The total Chinese bandwidth has capacity to cover 300 million subscribers for SDTV (standard definition TV) signals.China Outlook Consulting (COC) analysts track digital cable TV business demand on bandwidth that helps EPON/GPON and optical component suppliers to know the market. 3-in-1 network convergence progress, of course, drives HDTV development.

Set-Top Box: More Computer Like
Today, 65 million one-way simple-function set-top box(STB) products are installed in Chinese homes. Cable operators celebrate success when 1/3 of cable subscribers have been upgraded to digital cable users; but soon thereafter, subscribers will find their STB do not support their new 46¡± panel LCD TV which has higher resolution, mainstream 1080 x 1024 pixels.
Cable operators are ready to provide a high resolution STB, but subscribers are not willing to pay for a new box. This is typical Chinese culture today; Chinese people think a STB can be used for as long as the lifetime of the TV set.

Digital TV: Slim or Fat
Integrated digital TV (DTV) intends to put the STB and TV receiver in one box so that people do not see a box on top of the TV. In the past, people used one TV set with no changes at all for its lifetime. But in the future, the DTV will have to be changed to accomplish new digital services. COC analysts believe this represents the DTV trend.
