February 2005 Lenovo announces its fiscal Q3 profit(Feb 21, 2005) China’s leading electronics company Lenovo Group Ltd. recently announced its fiscal Q3 report. In the third quarter of 2004/2005 fiscal year, turnover of the Group's core business increased 4% while operating profits grew 19% YOY. The Group’s net profit was US$39.7million and the gross margin dropped 0.3% to 13.84 percent. Yang Yuanqing, the CEO of Lenovo, said: "The group will focus on the development of PC business and strategies to develop such business in the future." China’s handset manufacturing to overfull(Feb 21, 2005) China will cool down investment of handset manufacturing, announced by the National Development and Reform Committee. The handset manufacturing capability expects to hit 500 million units per year if another planned 40 handset factories go into operations, which will account for 80% of the total production of handset in the world. This raises concerns of the government due to over capacity risk. Driven by the development of local handset makers and foreign investment, China’s handset sector has grown in a very fast way in last five years. In 2004, China produced 240 million units handset, making the country the largest handset production base in the world. ZTE to win Indian IPTV contract(Feb 21, 2005) China’s telecom manufacturer ZTE Corp (Shenzhen, Guangdong) has got a US$20 million contract from India in terms of building a broadband IPTV network in India. According to the contract, ZTE will construct DSL broadband access system and VOD/IPTV system in New Delhi and its three satellite cities and provide IPTV network technology and solutions. These will make Atlas able to supply such individualized services as video on-demand, broadband TV, video teleconferencing, e-mail, web network and high-speed broadband data access. The IPTV system may provide packeted TV broadcast services on more than 40 channels. ZTE started its business in India in 2001 and won India’s national transmission backbone network contract in 2002.
