October 2004 The 3rd JEDEX Conference at Shenzhen(Oct 25, 2004) JEDEC has its 3rd JEDEX Conference at the Shangri-La Hotel in Shenzhen, China in October. China Semiconductor Industry Association (CSIA) and the China Electronics Standardization Institute (CESI) co-sponsored this conference with JEDEC. Topics that had been addressed during JEDEC included: Lead Free Manufacturing; Backend Packaging; Testing and Inspections; Radiation Hardening; Memory Module Validation and Quality Evaluations; Solder Joint Inspection and SMT Process Control. Over 700 participants attended this conference. There are 750 registered attendees to the conference, according to JEDEX. The opening keynotes were well attended by engineers from China OEM/EMS manufacturers, and IC design houses. The JEDEC SolidState Technology Association is the semiconductor engineering standardization body of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA), a trade association representing all areas of the electronics industry. China’s first Hi-Tech design park sets up in Wuxi (Oct 25, 2004) China set up its first Hi-Tech design park in Wuxi, Jiangsu province. The design park plans to hatch over 50 design companies in next 3-5 years in the areas of home appliance, telecommunications, machinery and packaging. According to Xuemin Tan, vice mayor of Wuxi, the finished phase I of the industrial design park covers an area of 16,000 square meters. Phase II, under construction, will cover 60,000 square meters, with an investment of 24 million US dollars. There are about ten key industrial design institutes and companies in Wuxi. The opening of the industrial design park will link the city with the booming Yangtze River Delta area and greatly improve the city's competitiveness in the manufacturing industry. Mobile multimedia alliance establishes in Beijing (Oct 25, 2004) China Mobile multimedia technology alliance was recently established in Beijing, aiming at formulating related technical standards and promoting the mobile multimedia technology development. We are trying to have breakthrough in multimedia technology development through this alliance. 3G has brought us a great opportunity to grow our own IP and core technology, said Hui Zhang, vice director of the alliance. This alliance consists of nine organizations, including, the research institute of the MII, China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, China Netcom, China Putian Group, Huawei Technology, Shenzhen ZTE and Vimicor Microelectronics. 3G handset conference in Shenzhen (Oct 18, 2004) 2004 3G handset development conference was held in Shenzhen recently. Sponsored by the MII and China Electronics News, this conference converged industry expertise, technology solution providers, semiconductor suppliers, equipment providers and handset manufacturers. China has successfully developed the first TDS-CDMA chipsets and handset, said Qinjian Lou, vice minister of the MII. He urged the importance of developing 3G terminal products. 3G is not far in China, he said. Based on the MII, till the end of September, China’s handset shipment reached 161 million units, up 37% YOY; among which export reached 80.69 million units, up 45.7% YOY. China has 327 million mobile phone subscribers. Hong Kong Electronics Fair 2004 and ElectronicAsia 2004 (Oct 18, 2004) The Hong Kong Electronics Fair 2004 and ElectronicAsia were held from Oct.13-16 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. The two fairs involved a wide range of electronics products, electronics appliances, components and parts. There are over 2,500 manufacturers of electronics products and components exhibitors in the shows. Conferences sponsored by Hong Kong Trade Development Council include hot topics such as Bluetooth Qualification & Interoperability, Supply Chain Financing Solutions, and China and International Product Certification. China Netcom raises US$1.5 bn IPO (Oct 18, 2004) China Netcom, the second largest China telecom operators, filed with the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission to raise US$1.5 bn IPO. China Netcom plans to spend about $8.54 billion between 2004 and 2006 to expand its networks, sources have said. The Company plans to sell 941.4 million common shares. China International Capital Corp. Ltd., Citigroup Global Markets Inc. and Goldman Sachs (Asia) LLC will underwrite the IPO. SAV and NET start China’s first TFT-LCD line (Oct 11, 2004) China’s first 5G TFT-LCD line has been put into production recently at Shanghai based SAV NEC LCD Co. , a joint venture between China’s leading electronics company SAV and the global LCD leader NEC. The total investment on this project was 114.6 billion Japanese Yuan. The production line uses the cutting-edge 4-mask and ODF techniques. After the completion of Phase I, the capacity will reach 22500 large pieces (1100mm*1300mm) of LCD Panels per month. It is said that by April next year after the completion of Phase III, the annual capacity will reach 52000 large pieces, equal to over 9.9 million 15-inch LCD displays per year. While most panels in domestic market are made in Korea, Taiwan and Japan, the set up of the production line in Shanghai opens a new page for LCD production in China. TCL and Alcatel JV go into operation (Oct 11, 2004) TCL and Alcatel Mobile phone Ltd. (TAMP), a joint venture between TCL communication technology holdings and Alcatel Corp., officially went into operation as planed. TCL holds 55% of the ownership while Alcatel owns 45% of the JV. The new JV is expected to make 20 million handsets annually in order to be on the top of handset makers in China and the seventh in the world. This partnership is regarded as a win-win strategy for both two parties. Based on the MII, the total contribution of foreign investment in China has weighed 70% of China’s electronics industry. China Hi-Tech Fair opens in Shenzhen (Oct 11, 2004) The 6th China Hi-Tech Fair has been held from Oct 12 to 17 in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. This annul fair is sponsored by the Chinese government to promote economy and technology co-operation between China and foreign countries. There are 4041 exhibitors in total. More than 40 well known international companies demonstrated their current technologies and products, such as Microsoft, Lucent, IBM, Cisco, Intel, and Siemens. Seminars are shining points in this event especially handset seminars. Sponsored by Creativity Convention & Exhibition (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd, The China Mobile Phones Manufacturing Technologies Seminar provided a platform for industrial expert, suppliers and manufacturers to share new thoughts about China’s handset manufacturing and technology development. Intellectual property protection was also a hot issue addressed in the industrial Summit. Vice premier Yi Wu spoke at the summit. She disclosed that new China Paten Law is going to be release very soon. Nortel helps China Telecom to expand its networks(Oct 4, 2004) Nortel Networks will provide optical and data solutions for Chine Telecom to expand its networks across Southern and Eastern China. Consequently, China Telecom will deploy Nortel Networks Optical Long Haul 1600 Optical Line Systems to expand its optical backbone networks in the cities of Wuhan, Guangzhou, Changsha, Fuzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Hefei, Chongqing, and Chengdu. The expansion is expected to be completed by the end of 2004. "China presents one of the fastest growing IP markets in the world," said Bob Mao, president and chief executive officer, Greater China, Nortel Networks. "We are delighted to be able to support China Telecom in delivering innovative services to the businesses and residential customers in this market.” In addition, China Telecom's Shanghai and Zhejiang branches will use Nortel Networks Services Edge Router (SER) 5500 to expand their data networks. The expansions will enable the two branches to serve an additional 500,000 and 1.8 million broadband subscribers. China establishes 9 electronics bases(Oct 4, 2004) The ministry of Information Industry (MII) recently announced the establishment of 9 national electronics industrial bases, in Beijing. The Chinese government wanted to enhance technical innovation and supply chain in these bases through promoting new government policies and investment. The nine cities and regions are: Beijing, Tianjin, Qingdao, Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, the costal regions along Fuzhou and Xiamen in Fujian province, and the Pearl River Delta regions in Guangdong province. The selected nine cities and regions accounted for 81.9% of China’s entire electronics industry in 2003. Industry experts believe that there will be more company-company alliance, foreign-sino R&D centers and consolidations among leading companies. Short messaging service boosts the “Little Smart” market(Oct 4, 2004) China Telecom and China Netcom, two largest fixed-line operators in China, recently announced the available short messaging services (SMS) between the two operators’ “Little Smart” users. This means that China Telecom’s “Little Smart” users can send short message to China Netcom’s “Little smart” users. In return, “Little Smart” users with China Netcom can send message to the “Little Smart” users with China Telecom. "Little Smart," also called Xiaolingtong, is built upon the existing fixed-line network with lower minute charge, one-way charge and cheap monthly fee. China Telecom and Netcom expect to boost the market through the short messaging service. At present, China has over 60 million “Little Smart” users.
